Our Story
Repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives.

In 1973, a small group of people picked up hammers and paintbrushes in Midland, Texas. They had seen their neighbors struggle with home repairs and chose to dedicate their time to homeowners who needed a hand. Their compassion inspired others and grew into a national movement.

The founding affiliates rehabilitated the homes of their neighbors during the last weekend in April, and began what was known as Christmas in April. The approach of 'neighbors helping neighbors' inspired others to get involved and eventually spread across the country, bringing together partners from all walks of life to help our neighbors year-round.

In 1988, the organization opened its national office in Washington, DC. With the growth of the organization came change, including a new name; in the mid 2000s, Christmas in April rebranded as Rebuilding Together. Today, Rebuilding Together operates nationwide with more than 120 affiliates around the county.
Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun (RTVOS) opened it's doors in 1991 and has been repairing homes, revitalizing communities, and rebuilding lives in Maricopa County for over 30 years. Over the past 30+ years, we have worked to provide free safety and accessibility features/modifications for Maricopa county's most vulnerable residents: seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, families with children, and members of marginalized communities, all living in low-income households.

RTVOS has helped more than 3,000 homeowners throughout Maricopa County and engaged numerous volunteers who have dedicated their time and talents to helping their community. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, community partners, local businesses, and our staff, RTVOS continues to provide services to hundreds of homeowners every year.
